AGA Health Foundation

Established on 1st February 1930, AGA Health Foundation (AGAHF) has evolved from the former Ashanti Goldfields Company Hospital — later known as Edwin Cade Memorial Hospital — into one of Ghana’s most enduring and progressive medical institutions. Founded to care for mine employees and their families, the hospital has grown into a modern, community-focused health system serving thousands across Obuasi, the Ashanti Region, and beyond.

 

In 2015, AGAHF transitioned into a sustainability-driven, business-focused health unit and now operates as one of the Sustainability Development Units (SDUs) of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine. This shift strengthened governance, enhanced operational efficiency, and expanded the Foundation’s ability to deliver accessible, high-quality, and patient-centred care.

 

AGAHF provides comprehensive medical, emergency, surgical, maternal and child health, occupational health, diagnostic, and specialized services, supported by skilled clinicians, nurses, and allied health professionals.

 

As an accredited institution for medical training, AGA Health Foundation is affiliated to Medical and Dental Council of Ghana for the training of senior housemanship in 5 disciplines- emergency and internal medicine, obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Surgery. As a teaching site for other healthcare courses, the hospital is affiliated to KNUST for the clinical training of nursing, midwifery and medical laboratory science. The facility also supports specialty nursing training and internship in critical care, peri-operative nursing and emergency nursing.

 

The Foundation continues to modernize through technology adoption, upgraded infrastructure, expanded clinical capabilities, and strengthened community outreach.

 

With a renewed vision to become a center of excellence in clinical care, teaching, and research, AGAHF is currently undertaking a transformative redevelopment plan — including new emergency facilities, a maternal and child health complex, private wards, and teaching infrastructure in collaboration with KNUST.

 

After 95 years of care and a decade of transformation, AGA Health Foundation remains a trusted anchor of health, innovation, and sustainable development in Obuasi and a model of how mining, health, and community development can integrate to improve lives over generations.
